Já falamos aqui da 3D4MD (3D para médicos), uma empresa que cria soluções médicas baratas para serem impressas em 3D, podendo ajudar as área mais remotas e carentes. O serviço espacial viu o potencial disso e, compreendendo que o espaço é um espaço bastante remoto, começou a usar disso.
Os astronautas já estão com uma impressora 3D abordo da Estação Espacial Internacional. A intenção é que pequenas peças possam ser impressas e trocadas com facilidade. Isso ajuda, pois não há necessidade de levar peças sobressalentes de tudo, sendo que se algo quebrar, é só imprimir uma nova peça. Assim, o peso, segurança e custo da viagem soam melhores.
Além disso há as questões médicas, qualquer coisa que um astronauta precise é um problema, é necessário esperar que o suprimento chegue, enviado da terra. Por isso a NASA se uniu a 3D4MD. Assim, quando astronautas precisarem de alguma coisa, escannearão a parte machucada e médicos e modeladores aqui na terra montarão o arquivo stl que será enviado para a nave e lá eles imprimirão a peça. O processo demorará algumas horas e não dias ou semanas, como era antes.
Isso cria uma nova perspectiva na segurança e qualidade de vida dos astronautas.
