OSCAR 2017 STATUETTES WERE MADE USING 3D TECHNOLOGY.

Last Sunday was the 89th Oscar ceremony, which since 1929 has awarded the best of the year in the film industry, being the most important and prestigious award in the cinema world.

The ceremony involves several traditions that have been updating as possible over time and this year 3D technology has entered into one of the adaptations of traditions.

The famous, iconic, and traditional Oscar statues passed this year through a 3D printing procedure to be made. It turns out that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences wanted to modernize the award, but at the same time they wanted something close to the first prize, the original of 1929.

Daniel, one of the artists who worked on the project, said the goal was to soften and modernize the format without the difference being shocking.

For that they scanned in 3D a figurine of the Oscar of 1929, modeled on that obtained image and printed in 3D model pieces, until arriving at the ideal model.

Then joined the 3D printing technology with the casting tradition. The printed statuettes were coated in ceramic shell and warmed to such a temperature that only one bark remained that would then be filled with liquid bronze and then galvanized with a permanent 24-carat reflective gold layer.

The result is discrete but significant. The figurine has the same shape, height (13.5 centimeters) and weight (incredible 8.5 kg in one piece so small). However, the facial features are more striking, giving to see even the delicacy of ears and a part of a hair.

But neither the company in charge had spoiler of the awarded ones. They had to make award plates of all nominees and only after the award has taken place is that the correct platelets would be attached to the figurines.

It seems that 3D printing technology is gradually invading even the most traditional ceremonies.
