Um dos pontos turísticos da Austrália é a Grande Barreira de Coral. Um monumento da natureza, está lá desde sempre e é impressionante sua beleza e importância ambiental.
Porém a barreira está ameaçada. Acontece que com o aquecimento global, a temperatura da água também sobe. Isso somado as constantes chuvas ácidas e a poluição está deixando os corais muito enfraquecidos. Eles estão brancos e quebradiços, não resistindo e deixando muitas falhas na barreira.
Ambientalistas e cientistas se uniram para uma solução e a impressão 3D apareceu como uma possibilidade muito interessante. Eles pensam em imprimir milhares de “próteses” de coral em 3D. Isso funcionaria de forma muito simples, a impressão 3D pode imprimir um coral idêntico ao do ambiente em um material que não faça mal ao ambiente. Então essa estrutura servirá de apoio para o coral vivo crescer em volta dele, usando sua rigidez para lhe dar firmeza. A estrutura ainda funcionará como habitat para algas e peixes, dando mais vida e saúde à barreira de corais.
Claro que isso ainda está sendo estudado, mas é uma possibilidade animadora e, se der certo, pode ser uma ajuda à ecologia mundial.

3D PRINTED CORAL PROSTHETICS CAN SAVE THE GREAT BARRIER REEF
One of Australia’s tourist attractions is the Great Barrier Reef. A monument of nature, it has always been there and it is impressive its beauty and environmental importance.
But the barrier is threatened. It turns out that with global warming, the water temperature also rises. That added to the constant acid rain and the pollution is leaving the corals very weakened. They are white and brittle, not resisting and leaving many gaps in the barrier.
Environmentalists and scientists came together for a solution and 3D printing came as a very interesting possibility. They think of printing thousands of coral “prosthetics” in 3D. This would work very simply, 3D printing can print a coral identical to the one in the environment in a material that does not harm the environment. So this structure will support the living coral grow around it, using its stiffness to give it firmness. The structure will still function as a habitat for algae and fish, giving more life and health to the coral barrier.
Of course this is still being studied, but it is an exciting possibility and, if it works, it can be a help to the world’s ecology.
